Eurekas Seek the Sweep

2024-03-27

Kyle Ervin throws a shot on goal

The Eurekas won game 1 and were looking for the season sweep.

Game 1 between the Eurekas and Greyhounds ended with the finding the game winner with 3 minutes left to play.  Game 2 started with the first goal being scored just two minutes in.

The goal was one of those goals that you could call an omen after seeing how the rest of the night would go.  It was a Kyle Ervin shot from the point that was elevated a bit more than he wanted.  Greg Moffat was in front boxing out his man and the next thing he knew, the puck was hitting him in the head.  The puck went up in the air and dropped down behind Nick Comeau in the Greyhounds goal.

Less than 2 minutes later it was the Ryder brothers combining for the Eurekas second goal as Matt one timed the puck in.  Max Boudreau responded for the Greyhounds and the defeated body language on the Greyhounds bench was looking a bit less defeated.

The Eurekas went to the power play and it's not a good idea to let them do that, as they made the most of it, restoring their 2 goal lead as Matt Ryder notched his second of the night.  Chris Ryder made it 3-1 a couple minutes later and the Greyhounds were in desperate need of a spark.

Connor Tousignant helped with that spark as he fed linemate Stephen Warwick who beat Phil Sprague in the Eurekas goal with 38 seconds to go in the first.  4-2 is how the period concluded and a 2 goal lead is never a safe lead in the Nomad Hockey League, so there was hope on both benches at the half.

The Greyhounds started The second off with a bout of hard work as Dylan MacDonald urged his team to work their asses off.  The problem with fighting to stay alive is that sometimes you can get carried away and a stick check can turn into a slash, and that was how the Greyhounds found themselves down a man for the second time on the night.  9 seconds.  That was all it took for the Ryders to link up for the power play goal as Matt finished off another hat trick.

From that point on, the game was in the hands of the Eurekas.  There were a few flashes of brilliance from the team in grey, like a second Boudreau goal, and a late shot off the post by Derick Levesque, but the Eurekas managed to get a lot of odd man rushes with  Ryder adding his 4th, and Matt Peters ripping a slapshot in on a 2 on 1.  In the end the mighty Greyhounds would fall to the Eurekas 7-3 as Jonny Bamford would lead his team to their first finals appearance.  They just await the winner of the close series between the Aurora and Osprey with the earliest Game 1 of the finals being held on Tuesday April 2nd.
