More Delays at the RBC
2024-10-24The delays hit hard for the second night in a row
A night after a Zamboni broke down on the ice at the RBC Centre, we figured our odds of a big delay were low. "Hold my beer" said Noah Joncas as he shot a puck off the side glass at the end of warmup, shattering the glass.
Half an hour and a sheet of plywood later we were finally getting under way. The Norsemen quickly got to work testing Logan MacLean in net for the Aurora and it was Pete Swistun opening the scoring 46 seconds in when he deflected a shot from the point.
The Aurora went down a man just 20 seconds later and it looked like the Norsemen may add to their lead, but they were denied and it wasn't until Brandon Crowell took a pass from David Lacey and threw a bomb top shelf over the glove of Trevor Pate, filling in for an injured Phil Sprague. Pete Swistun got the Norsemen's lead back near the end of the first with his second of the game.
Blake Whebby was positioned perfectly on the back door to receive a pass from Ryan DeWolfe as the Norsemen went up 3-1 early in the second.
The Aurora weren't done though as Lacey urged his team on. Matt Simpson bobbled the puck at the blue line and instead of giving up a breakaway, he took down Ryan DeWolfe. That's when the penalty shot got called. DeWolfe came in alone on Logan MacLean and MacLean made a big save with 7 minutes to play, keeping the score within reach.
Just a minute later, Matt Simpson atoned for his mistake as he took a clapper over the glove of Pate. Then on his next shift, Simpson did it again, shooting over the glove to tie the game. No-one else could bury in regulation so the first shootout of the season was upon us.
The Norsemen went first in the shootout, Josh Stevens... missed the net. Aurora - Crowell. Norsemen - Warwick off the post, Aurora - Lacey denied, Norsemen - Tousignant off the crossbar. Aurora - Matt Simpson with the Datayuk for the win!
The Aurora earn two points in the shootout while the Norsemen give up the lead late to end up with one point. The Aurora sit one point ahead of the Norsemen as we head into the next week of action.
