Close Matchup Between the Greyhounds and Eurekas

2025-01-10

Adam Jarvis and Jeff Snow battle for a puck

A good game on Thursday

The final two teams to get their 2025 portion of the season underway were the Eurekas and the Greyhounds, the latter of which were first to appear ready to play, and not just that their players were on the ice before the Eurekas, they got a bunch of shots on goal before the Eurekas had seen the Greyhounds half of the ice.

In the 3rd minute of play, Adam Jarvis of the Greyhounds, took the puck into the Eurekas corner and threw a backhand pass, appearing to go to no-one, but then came Derick Levesque from the point, picking it up in the slot and ripping it top shelf and resigning Nick Comeau to a game in net without water as his was destroyed.

Michael Lawless got a breakaway on Comeau 90 seconds later but Comeau shut the five-hole just in time to keep it 1-0.  The Greyhounds were being relentless.  Some beautiful cycling ended with a pass to Nick Marshall sitting off to the left wing side of the net, and he one timed the puck into the net for his 4th of the season.

A failed Eurekas pinch meant a Cameron Bissell pass got through to Andrew MacDonald at the blue line and he worked to find Scott Stewart all alone, and his shot just squeaked through the goaltender's equipment and in to make it 3-0 with 6:00 still to go.  The Greyhounds would finish the period with that being the score and leading in shots on goal as well, 12-10, but the Eurekas were starting to make better plays.

20 seconds into the 2nd period, Jeff Miles was sent in on a breakaway and alone with Comeau, he couldn't convert.  After a little skate around, Nick Marshall sent Miles in alone again and this time Jeff took sent it through the legs of Comeau.

Then just 30 seconds later, a little give and go down low ended up on Scott Stewart's stick at the bottom of the circle.  He made a quick spin and shot it low, and the puck made its way over the goal line.  5-0 Greyhounds with 2 goals in the period before the Eurekas could register a shot.

This game wasn't a write off just yet however, as the Eurekas finally got some shots on goal from scoring positions.  Then a Moffat muffin was delivered to Leighton Yeo all alone.  He stepped in and fired a puck past the blocker of Jamie Wutke to get the Eurekas on the board and fired up.  One can only imagine Moffat's dad shaking his head in the stands, unless they knew where to look, then they could have seen it with their own eyes.

Jordan Kenny then went beast mode, busting his ass up the left wing from his own end.  He was a freight train that wasn't getting derailed, and as he approached the net, he found Cody Meisner back door where Meisner one timed the pass into the open net.

Meisner's first of the year would not be his last as Jordan Webber pinched in and found Cody again in the right place for a back door one timer, this one with less than 5 minutes to play.  The game was suddenly 5-3 and getting awfully real for the Greyhounds.

With only 2 lines, compared to the full Eurekas bench, the Greyhounds early successes were looking quite distant.  With 3:08 to play, Tyler Carr made a rush to the net and flying through the air as he was tripped, the puck deflected off Wutke and to Connor MacPherson who tucked it in.  This was suddenly a one goal game, the Eurekas looking in charge.  They pulled their goalie and tried to even it up.  Off a faceoff win, Leighton Yeo threw a puck to the net with Shannon Farrell headed to the back post.  The puck was just too far ahead or Farrell would have been looking at the open net with a glorious chance.

Despite their best efforts, the Eurekas would fall to the Greyhounds by a score of 5-4, but they were able to celebrate the fewest shots allowed this season, and actually tying the Greyhounds with 26 shots on goal.  Everyone should take note that the Eurekas are moving in the right direction.
