Stripes? Who Needs Stripes?
2024-11-26The Lions and Osprey played a unique game
It was a rare Monday night game in the Nomad Hockey League with Dustin Hall's Lions playing Nathan Bessey's Osprey. As the buzzer went to end warm up, pretty much everyone noticed that the refs hadn't arrived yet, and some concern was creeping in. There were no refs in the referee room either, so Bessey and Hall got together and decided that they'd play the game with "gentleman's rules". Essentially deciding to play with teams calling their own offside calls, vacating the zone when there would be a whistle etc. It made for a bit of an odd game with the teams backing off at times to avoid doing things that could be construed as penalties, but it was a quick game still as there was a lot more flow without faceoff stoppages, and both teams played games with respect for their opposition.
The first goal of the game came off the stick of Matt Ryder as he fired a wrister low to the blocker side of Jamie Wutke. Matt Baird made a big save on Dustin Hall with his backside, and the puck cleared by an Osprey D to keep it 1-0. Kevin Myketyn, back in action after losing some teeth the previous week, was wearing a fish bowl, and he was glad of that when a puck delflected right up into the lower part of his bubble early in the first. It would have no doubt hit him square in the mouth. My money is on him keeping that on permanently at this point.
The game was pretty even with the teams getting chances that the Goaltenders were equal to. The Lions were getting a bit lazy with their backchecking and the Osprey were peppering Wutke. Ryder made a back door pass over to Bessey and the Lions all thought this was a sure goal, but he took too long with the puck and Wutke made a sliding two pad stack, the save of the game for sure.
Kyle Weatherbee threw a pass up to a cherry picking Dustin Hall and Hall skated up the right wing and fired a wrister that caught Matt Baird moving toward the pass option. The goal was just Hall's second of the year, having last put the puck in the net way back on opening night.
The game was tied at 1 after the first period and the Osprey took that personally. Bobby Sacre cleaned up a Ryder rebound from a tough angle to make it 2-1 early in the second and the Osprey's longer bench started showing as the Lions forwards were looking tired, except for Josh Martel who was working his ass off for them. Matt Ryder would add another goal that I can't remember, and then Tayler Faulkner would pick up a crazy rebound that went off the glass and came back out in front, as the Osprey went up 4-1. Nathan Bessey picked up a puck off a scrum in the corner and fed a beauty of a pass to Ryder alone in front. He deked and made it 5 for the Osprey with his hat trick goal, and 4th point of the night.
With less than a minute to go, Hall took a slapshot from the ringette line to make it 2 goals for the Lions on the night but it wasn't nearly enough as the Osprey earned the 3 points in a 5-2 win.
